It's January 1 and musicians all over are asking themselves, "What do I want for 2013?"
There are plenty of articles, books, and people who can explain to you how to set goals, so I'm going to take a negative approach for this blog post and give you one way to make sure you don't get what you want...
Not making a decision (or making the decision to do nothing, if you want to get specific about what's really happening) causes more people to fail than making a wrong decision. While not doing anything may feel safe, rarely is safety the result. This is because the world, much like the music business, is constantly changing. If you stay in one place too long, your position will have shifted, even if you haven't "moved."
This year, I encourage you to focus on making decisions and taking action on them, rather than getting caught up in indecisiveness. When you make a decision and take action, you might not get everything right, but there is little chance you'll screw everything up either.
Need help making a decision? Try this...
1. Write down all the positive things that might happen if you act in a certain way.
2. Write down all the negative things that might happen if you act in a certain way.
3. Write down what is most likely to happen if you act in a certain way.
If you can live with what's most likely to happen, take action!
Best wishes for 2013!
