Thanks for the info, I agree with you whole heartedly. In speaking with artist and some indie labels, I find also that lack of planning on the business and marketing side is also a killer. Not having the right business and marketing tools hurt most chances. Another one is artist not having the right team around them. They have the hanger-onners but they are worthless in business, marketing or finances. Another key mistake is the thought that fame will bring fortune. Keep up the great work one day they will get it!

Yeah, I would add that you need to be somewhat proficient with your music and practice all you can. I don't know how many times I've had bands open for us that brought some friends but ran more people out because they couldn't sing or play their instruments. IF you do original material it really helps to have good songs too.

great blog! i wish i had come accross it sooner! i would love to see the idea of image explored further - what does it consist of? It's clearly more than what you wear and good photos, but must include things like the shows you play, the way you talk and walk etc.

The importance of marketing is huge, but without a clear image - what exactly are you marketing??

Mistake #1 Is definitely the BIGGEST. So many people try to "wing it" or "take short cuts" in this game then wonder why they gets "NO dough".
How can you play the game if you don't know the rules, can't recognize the pieces,don't know what the board even looks like and are too stupid to at least ask somebody who's played B4 or get a coach.

Its great to have this kind of info available free to people like myself. I agree with all of the comments, but #5 I have always put my R.E.A.L. Life into my music. Anybody that listens to my words knows what I'm all about. So keeping it R.E.A.L. is my persona, I may have partied like a ROCK STAR but

The most important thing that a live musician can understand is how his or her original music and performance relates to their market.


1. WORKING A CROWD.

If you play slow music, people rub bellies. If you play fast music, people buy refreshments (hint: refreshments, ding!) I use two fast, one slow in any given set, as a general rule.

Work the crowd and let your club owners know that you can work a crowd. Also, set up your audio with a stereo for the managers office with your main out mix down; something the manager can turn up and down, without having to leave the office."


2. GOOD VOCALS.

Continually ask yourself, "Is my stuff better than the radio stuff? Better than the latest album stuff? What can we add and what can we take out? Do people listen to our music because it's good original talent and performance or is it just something to do on a night out?

Also, Is our music communicating a popular subject, and are we using interesting vocal parts more than loud instruments? (hint: ding! ding!)


3. INSTRUMENTAL FILLS (comping.)

Finally, Does our music fit the instruments into the songs we write and play in a manner that compliments the lyrics? (hint: Don't accent a soft, slow love songs with cannons or severe drum solos. Use tact, be tasty!)

If you prepare for success you will not only recognize it when it comes, but you'll participate in it as it occurs.

The "music" business is just that, a business. YYu must have a plan and be dedicated tolearning and growing with every opportunity. Seek to find a niche and explore perfecting that idea to help yourself. Marketing is in=mportant, but talent and drive are just as important.

One of the things I noticed immediately is this list could apply to many industries/jobs... it's a great example of advice for the music professional, but also includes points that could be 'generalized' to help people in other professions.
