Sometimes you guys amaze me. Check out the following comment about the post on The Cost of Dedication in the Music Industry, which I think is so good that it deserves its own post.
I did a paper in college on a similar subject a couple of years ago. I remember that one of my main points was that, in any other business, corporate or otherwise, when sales on a particular product begin to decline the first and most obvious reason for the decline is customer dissatisfaction. With the record company, when digital downloading became popular, they immediately assumed that the loss is sales was due to file sharing, or “stealing”. Isn’t it said that the worst type of people are those that assume the worst in people? A liar doesn’t trust anyone, a robber assumes everyone is trying to steal from them. Isn’t it ironic that an industry bent on ripping people off immediately came to the conclusion that everyone was trying to rip them off? Did it never occur to them that the real reason sales were declining was possibly because the quality of their product was declining? Perhaps many of their consumers no longer felt that the product the record company was producing was worth paying for? In recent years I definitely haven’t felt that the major label music I hear on the radio is anything I would want to go out and pay for. Heck most of the artists have to borrow beats and tunes from other past artists because they can’t even write their own material. Anybody hear “SOS”? At any rate, the music I tend to focus on these days is independent. Even if the recording quality isn’t the best at least there is some talent, some creativity there. The artist is free to pursue their art the way they want to and their actually seems to be a commitment between the artist, their fans, and their indie label as a whole. When the majors begin to come to a screeching halt I hope that some executive wakes up and realizes what’s really going on. Isn’t it scary that the top label execs are top ranked university graduates? What in the world are these colleges teaching their students?
