Or...why musicians send out press kits to a ton of people without doing research.

I'm sure there are a ton of reasons, but the #1 seems to be that licking a bunch of envelopes is brain-dead work which makes people feel like they're getting a lot accomplished.
It takes absolutely no thought to go through (insert music directory here), copy dozens (or even hundreds) of addresses, pack a bunch of envelopes with CDs, and throw everything in the mail.
It's a lot more work to do research, make a few cold calls, get rejected, pick yourself up, make a few more cold calls, get rejected again, etc.
Any kid can understand this is what it takes to make things happen and that is obvious when you watch one learning how to walk.
But somehow embracing rejection and failure like that got lost along the way and we go for something a little more anonymous, like never seeing a press kit get thrown away...assuming it ever gets opened.
