Gotta love a guy like Johnny Carson. He had a long and very successful career, but when it was time to quit, he quit and he did it with dignity. When it was over, he put a fork it in. He’d not doing any interviews and when NBC asked him to come back for a special show on the history of television, he refused.
Always a guy to stand up for himself and others, Johnny honored a strike by members of AFTRA in 1697 by refusing to do new shows. When NBC aired reruns of Carson’s shows during his absence, without his consent, Johnny refused to return to the Tonight Show until the AFTRA strike was settled, and NBC had negotiated a new contract with him.
But that’s not the reason why I’m mentioning Johnny Carson today. I want to put up a quote of his that I think you’ll relate to…
“Never continue in a job you don’t enjoy. If you’re happy in what you’re doing, you’ll like yourself, you’ll have inner peace. And if you have that along with physical health, you will have had more success than you could possibly have imagined.”
Now, I don’t think Johnny was unhappy with doing the Tonight Show for so many years; it’s not about that. And even if it was, this isn’t really about Johnny Carson…it’s about you.
If you’re unhappy in your current situaton, the time to do something about it is now. If you’re in a job you hate, in a bad relationship, or aren’t happy with where you live, it’s not going to get any better until you make that first step for change.
Sitting around just makes you fat. Even if you decide to quit your job and you have to go back to it in six weeks (or six days), you still made the effort.
Take a look at www.indiebiz.com and you’ll see how I had to quit over twenty jobs to do what I’m doing now. Each time I did, I tweeked it until I was able to finally do it once and for all.
Something to think about…
